Clinton, N.C. — A Rocky Mount funeral-home owner convicted a decade ago of plotting with his mistress to kill his wife has died in prison, officials said.

Mark Bowling, 47, died of natural causes at Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, where he was serving a 189- to 236-month sentence for second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Bowling, the former owner of several Bowling Funeral Home operations in eastern North Carolina, was the defendant in a high-profile trial in September 2008 when he decided to plead guilty.

Bowling's mistress, Rose Vincent, admitted to gunning down Julie Bowling in the garage of the Bowling home on Dec. 8, 2006, but she said Mark Bowling provided her with a map and instructions on how to carry out the crime while he was away on a scuba trip.

Vincent told investigators that Mark Bowling offered her $50,000 to kill his wife and even threatened to kill himself if she didn't carry it out.

She is serving a 29-year sentence for second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
